Health Care Solutions For Oregon

What's New

Everyone knows health care costs more than it should.  The good news is that we have a shot at putting solutions in place, if we take action this summer.

The Oregon Health Fund Board, a group established by the Legislature and appointed by Gov. Kulongoski, is creating a comprehensive reform plan.

This summer, after a series of community meetings in May and June, the Board will release a draft plan. Public hearings on the plan are expected in September, and the final plan will become a bill in the 2009 Oregon Legislative session.

Overview

With Oregon’s families and businesses getting squeezed by rising health care premiums and out-of-pocket medical expenses, Gov. Ted Kulongoski has appointed a group of experts to help put together a plan to reform our state’s health care system.

Yet some of the most sensible ideas are drawing the fiercest opposition from the most powerful players in this debate: including the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.

As this debate goes on, OSPIRG is working to counter the influence of these powerful interests and speak out on behalf of common-sense solutions to our health care problems. But to make sure our voices are heard, we need your help.

Health insurer profit and surplus levels, combined with a failure to contain ever-increasing health care costs, are key drivers of the sharply rising insurance rate increases.
